When it comes to nutrition and supplementation, most MDs know jack & shit (in America), unless they self-study. My buddy is a cardiac anesthesiologist, and he had a total of 4 hours of nutrition courses. Pathetic, really. I don't know how much education universities give docs in Europe, but I certainly hope it's more.
Anyway, I've read studies using boluses of 250,000 iu or Vitamin D3. Beyond that dose becomes problematic, but doses of 100,000-200,000 iu have been used w/out any side effects, and are very effective to bringing blood Vitamin D levels up to 40+ ng/mL.
Since I think it's a pain to take it daily, I throw down 50-70,000 iu every few weeks. Works for me. Had my blood tested recently, and it was 42 ng/mL. I should probably take more, actually, as you're not getting into the toxic range until you're around 150 ng/mL. Anything over 100 ng/ML is too high, and doesn't have a known benefit, to my knowledge.
