headphones review: Philips SHP9500 - bits - 08-11-2016

Damn I love these!

I've only had them for 2 days but the quality is great and they are VERY comfortable. They are open back so they are ideal for home/private use because people will be able to hear what you're hearing. That is the trade off with open back headphones though - comfort vs. privacy. You can wear these for hours and hours without fatigue or feeling like your ears are on fire.

They are $60 at newegg, about $70 on amazon, and possibly less if purchased used on craigslist or ebay but they are on par with $200 - $300 headphones. Some say they are are better than the sennheiser HD 600, I wouldn't go that far I think the hd600s sound better BUT not good enough to pay an extra $300 for. The quality difference is maybe worth $50, more than that and it's not worth it.

The cord is super long, nearly 10 feet but it is removable so you can buy a shorter cable for $5 - $10 if it starts getting in the way. I like that it's super long since it lets me move around.

In terms of actual effects on subs, I can hear more detail in both the ocean surf and trickling stream that I couldn't with earbuds or my old sony headphones. I don't know if that will make a difference. These could also be used with ultrasonic, I you're not supposed to BUT since they are so big you can hold your phone and use the frequensee app right up to the inside of the headphone and get the proper DB level and not worry that it's inaccurate.

Listening to ultrasonic with my studio speakers I run it at -40db, with these headphones -40db gives me a headache so I run it at -60 DB without a headache but it feels MUCH heavier and I get mentally exhausted pretty quick. I don't know if that's a good sign or bad sign.

Overall it's a great buy, a must have for anyone listening to subs for 10 hours a day Big Grin
